I'm Neil, I'm 26 years old, male and from St Helens in the UK.

I'm new to this, so I hope to get some constructive comments on my work. I've always wanted to write but have only just got around to actually doing it. This is my first effort at contributing to anything like this, so please be gentle with me!

I'm currently unemployed, so I'm spending all my time writing begging letters to companies to ask for jobs, it's all very soul destroying.

I studied Economics at The University of Sheffield and until recently had been working as a buyer for a furniture company. In my spare time I enjoy reading (obviously), travelling, sports (soccer, cricket and rugby), music and meeting new people.

I have many favourite authors: In fiction, George Orwell, Truman Capote, John Steinbeck, Hanif Kureishi and Douglas Coupland probably qualify as my top five. I also like a lot of non-fiction writers like Bill Bryson, Richard Dawkins, Francis Wheen and a British newspaper columnist called Charlie Brooker, who may well be the wittiest bloke on the whole planet.

In terms of influences, i'd say all of the above mentioned authors have had a pretty deep and profound effect on me. Music is also a big influence on my life, great songs touch you in a way that almost nothing else can, so artists like The Smiths, Bright Eyes, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello... (I could probably name a hundred others) have all influenced me throughout my life.
